Autumn is the shortest season, a grand finale of vibrant colors marking the season’s end, when leaves fall to earth as a blanket for the winter months. Unlike spring, there is no visual promise of creation to come. It’s nature’s final show of the year…and it’s a grand one.
Living at sea level on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, we decided to extend our appreciation of autumn days by traveling to the mountains, where nature’s fall colors were unfolding in the high elevations. Katie and I and our two Westies, Julep and Derby, drove along Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley into the Appalachians and the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, staying in a home nestled among the steep hills surrounding Asheville. This area, rich in culture and the arts, is an ideal setting for a vacation, but there was far too much to see and photograph than we could possibly handle in a week. We will be back. The following images include some of the changing autumn scenery of this beautiful region as nature’s colors approached their peak season, a grand finale before the winter months.

Good morning Wilson! Your photos are simply lovely and Julep and Derby are so cute. Isn’t it fun having them. I so enjoy my 3 yorkies, and last year we took them on a trip to the Great Smokies to enjoy the fall color. They had such a great time, and we got lots of cute photos of them, and certainly of the fall colors. There is something though that I need to email to you personally so you can get it fixed on your blog. It will be very surprising to you, and need it to be repaired. my email is jstonefnp@yahoo.com. As soon as I get your email, I will send the information to you.
Oh and isn’t that Biltmore Estate amazing? We went there on our trip, and I was inspired to go back there someday at Christmas time for all of their amazing Christmas festivities. Bet that is a photographers delight!
The mountains showing their colors several weeks before the eastern shore were beautiful. Hopefully, in the near future we’ll plan another trip to Asheville to visit what we missed on this trip. Happy Fall.
